Silver Comet 2K Fun Run October 31, 2009
Posted by jlojogs RunWell the idea was to run the half marathon, when the gang told me that they were going to have a booth for Operation Bootcamp. That would be a really great idea if I had signed up last year. Alas, telepathy is yet another skill I have yet to acquire.
I settled for helping out with the 2K. We saw the race start as we were being bused over to our start line. That was kind of neat, because normally I’m somewhere in the crowd in the middle to back, so to be a spectator you get to see the elite runners start. Definetly inspiring to see people who are in shape enough to compete to win a half/full.
On the way over it began to POUR rain. All of the sudden I wasn’t sooo sad I wasn’t running the half. There were only 30 participants or so for the 2K so, we did a little warmup for them and then headed over to the trail. The rain had taken a break at that point. The cold set in after that. So I spent the next few hours shivering in the cold working at the booth. Definetly would have rather been running during that time.
18 miles tomorrow though! Halloween is not as scary.

New Shoe Blues October 27, 2009
Posted by jlojogs RunI had to call the run short today. I got 2 pairs of new shoes to divide the miles between bootcamp and marathon training so I don’t burn through my shoes as quickly and I have different support for the different activities. All good in theory right?
The bootcamp shoes are 10.5 narrows so I avoid the blisters on the tips of my toes, but still have the ankle support. Then I did a 10.5 regular for my Saucony’s which I had worn the last few months, which is another 1/2 size up.
I did the intermediate runs last week on the treadmill in my new Saucony’s and I didn’t have any problems with the blisters on the tips of my toes, but instead it was looser around my ankle and the toungue of the shoe jammed into the top of my right ankle causing pretty painful swelling and bruising.
I made it through those runs but was so sore I took a few days to rest and let the bruising go away. Today I decided I’d just give the 10.5 narrows a try so I could get my long run in. Almost a good idea.
I wore my thick Thorlos which I normally wear for long runs. Not a good idea when a) running in the gym where its a little bit warmer and b) where you are wearing a narrower shoe when your foot starts to swell. At the 3.5 mile point I felt a hot spot starting on the arch of my right foot.
I gave up my covetted spot on the treadmill lane at the gym and went to the locker room in seach of thinner socks, which by the grace of God I had. I swapped them out and headed back out and got another 2 miles in, but the blister was there and running in the narrows was not helping it. I decided it was better to call the run save it for Saturday than to push it and have a huge blister which bothered me for the coming weeks.
Frustrated doesn’t even describe though!!
